Looking at Discogs they were numbered just like Now That's What I Call Music. Number 14 was 1970 and 92 was 1985 so they must have started in 1968 but still going after Now 1 in 1983. Funny how it took them just over 15 years to reach nearly 100 volumes and Now have taken 35 years in 2018 (20 years more). Here is the the link below.
